As Emperors Diocletian and Maximian enter Rome, Sebastian and Susanna mourn the recent martyrdoms of some of their friends, betrayed by a treacherous informant. And the noose is closing on Sebastian himself. But their problems have only begun.

Diocletian offers Susanna to Maximian, a gift to honor him as the new co-emperor and Augustus. But he does not count on the girl’s refusal. “After the massacre of the Theban Legion?” she exclaims. Christians whom Maximian had massacred in Gaul.

Sebastian has long hidden his Christian faith, all while stomaching his suspicions that Diocletian might have murdered two emperors. But the condemnation of innocent Susanna is the last straw.
